Opportunity For Industry To Get Involved In Innovative Project

We need your help!

This is an exciting opportunity to participate and engage in solving some of the challenges faced by Sustainable Drainage Solutions – SuDS. Please see how you can get involved below.

As part of our project, the SuDS+ team are using a Challenge process to address some of the difficult problems associated with SuDS in general, the SuDS+ process during this project, and for the anticipated rollout of SuDS+ in the future.

SuDS+ has reimagined the benefits of SuDS, by de-prioritising drainage (flooding) as their primary driver, aiming to tailor to meet the needs of the community, offering multiple benefits associated with amenity, biodiversity, climate, health, wellbeing, education, housing, jobs and overall community resilience (‘+’). As part of SuDS+, a list of locations and wider benefits in the Stanley South area have been identified in collaboration with the community, however the current challenges are to identify how best to:

· Design infrastructure that meets as many needs as possible,

· Understand the impact that the infrastructure has on local community and monitoring the broad range of wider benefits that these SuDS+ installations may have.

We are looking for creative solutions/approaches, at all stages of development and from all sectors globally to address these SuDS+ challenges. If you are interested in being involved in the project, please respond to the call to industry by completing the surveys below by 26th March 2024.

There are multiple opportunities available for participation in the calls to industry, including:

· Consideration by Durham County Council (UK) for installation in Stanley South in 2024 (implementable solutions only)

· Inclusion in the SuDS+ handbook which will be published globally in 2027

· Exposure to the wider FCRIP program, shared between 25 teams in local authority for flood risk management, and project teams across academia, consulting, EA and utilities.

For more information on the SuDS+ approach, please see our recent publication (case study 4) in Environmental Scientist or our project website: about SuDS+. If you are unsure if your solution/approach applies to the SuDS+ project, please contact elizabeth.court@isleutilities.com for more information.

Call to Industry:

The current challenge is to design infrastructure that meets as many needs and wider benefits as possible. We are looking for creative solutions/approaches, at all stages of development and from all sectors globally. The ‘+’ element of SuDS+ extends across the environmental, social and economic pillars of resilient urban communities (beyond ‘drainage’) and so we are interested in both traditional and creative solutions, including those that may not have previously been applied to SuDS or water management activities, that can provide wider benefits and address multiple issues further than flood risk.

Traditional monitoring includes scientific techniques such as water flow and quality monitoring, however the current challenge is to understand the impact that the infrastructure has on local community and to monitor the broad range of wider benefits that these SuDS+ installations may have, this could include many different technological, social and citizen science monitoring approaches.

We are looking for creative solutions/approaches, at all stages of development and from all sectors globally. We are interested in both traditional and creative solutions, including those that may not have previously been applied to SuDS or water management activities, that can monitor SuDS+ benefits and engage local communities.
