Tree Work In South Moor Memorial Park
SuDS+ have begun to look at our second site, South Moor Memorial Park. The area around the park received the most improvement ideas in our survey last year and was supported by the public vote last November. “Increase the range of activities and facilities available in South Moor Memorial Park aimed at all age groups.” There will be opportunities coming up for residents and groups to help shape the activities and facilities in the coming months.
Prior to any work starting, specialist officers have undertaken a preliminary walk of the site with a full health and condition survey to follow. It has been found the recent storms, flooding and through natural competition a number of trees now present an un-tolerable risk to the public. These trees will require management for the benefit of the public, eco system and SuDS project. Unfortunately, a small number of said trees are those that are home to fairy doors. The fairy doors will be stored and used in the park redesign. The tree management will also improve the longevity of the tree stock on this site for future generations. A patch of invasive Laurel shrubs are slowly taking over the park and will be removed with a native species replanted.
There will be some disruption while the tree work is carried out with footpath diversions and closures possible. Contractors will aim to keep disruption to a minimum but the work can’t be carried out without inconvenience.
We hope to have engagement with residents soon to get ideas and work through a wide range of options to increase the activities and facilities available in the park.
Did you know the water run off from the proposed solar farm up in Burnhope could be heading your way if planning approval gets the go ahead. Lets hope it does not flood the area each time it rains. Go look at the flooding document on Durhams portal. As the water passes over the scrapings they are also planning on the nature reserve. By the way 40,000 cattle carrcusess still lay beneath from the foot and mouth outbreak.
