New student research on leaky dams published

Durham University student Emily Wooders, who has been working with the Stanley SuDS+ project for the past few years, has completed her final year dissertation.

The dissertation investigates “To what extent can leaky dams alleviate flooding under current and future climate conditions? A case study of South Moor, County Durham.” Building on the work of the Stanley SuDS+ partnership, the study combines detailed field measurements with hydraulic (flood) modelling to assess how the network of leaky dams installed in Stanley Burn performs under a range of flood and climate scenarios. Emily has also used innovative methods, such as the 3D Scaniverse app, to measure leaky dam dimensions.

Emily has received top grades for her study and is now moving on to the next stage in her career. Thanks to Emily for sharing her work and for conducting the research in the SuDS+ study area with our volunteer made leaky dams.

Emily regularly visited our leaky dams over several months to collect data during different weather conditions. The calculations taken investigated if the leaky dams were effective at times of peak flow to reduce flooding, how they changed the river and if leaky dams can be a major part of nationwide flood reduction policies.
